Default Adsense at top vs. bottom

We manage AdSense for a number of sites, including directories, forums and static content sites. Our results as far as having AdSense content at the top or bottom of the page has varied greatly. We have the same number of Ad views, but on one of our sites (a directory) .. the CTR has been similar, but eCPM is ten times higher for the ads at the top.

This is interesting because often we hear that the highest value ads are not always placed in the 1st content block. We have similar CTR on the top and bottom on that site, and the top literally provides an overall improvement of 500-100% as far as overall CTR goes. Mind you - it is a directory site, the traffic is relatively low, and the category detail pages are pretty long. Perhaps we should run leaderboards on the top, and skyscrapers on the side. I suspect the 728x90 ads at the bottom just arent hitting the eyeballs.

the more visible it is the more profits.

top u see for sure do u scroll the page all the time , i dont think so and theres.... your explanation of why its high values on top

Well May be yes.. with Forums and Directory its easy to have a 728x60 on top but some times it looks odd...

like with my board...

http://www.portal4webhost.com

its a new board therefore i think placing a big banner on top will look odd right now, unless few months later if and when forums grows big on content then we can have that banner placed on top... how ever i went to for a banner bellow in stade

also http://www.doorersathi.com mainlly a Statis site (Our Cyber Cafe portal) give a lot from its bellow banner... and even http://album.doorersathi.com too...

I think it's important to remember your users when placing your ads. If you over-do your ads, people will simply be put off your site. The best thing I've found is to put maximum, one skyscraper and one footer if you have a normal site. For forums, I've found the best thing to do is to have a footer and a "after first post in thread" advertisement. I've always found that as the best way forward and it seems to work well. While it probably brings in a little less than a header and a skyscraper ad, the footer ad still works well and is unobstrusive for members.

I think the best placement for adsense ads is on the sidebars.
it's because on the top and buttom the ads looks too much like ads and users
realy don't like to see ads on the site. doesn't matter on which placement..
also, you should make the ads in the same style as your site so they will blend in good way.
one more thing, if you're putting ads on the top\bottom I reccomend you to put images ads
instead of text ads.
I hope I helped someone here... (it's my toughts only.. I'm not an expert)

Hello you question is quite interesting I had similar problem like you and always wanted to get high CTR and above and bottom method you have mentioned really worked for me. But there's a catch i assume it will be more understandable if you name it header and footer or navbar or footer. When you place code on a same page between body tags then it's whole one page. But when you place code is header and footer then it makes 2 separate section of a web page and in such case header always get you higher CTR then footer. So make it above code between header tags and bottom in footer tags.

Good Luck
